About Artist Julie Perkins

I live in Lincolnshire with my husband and two sons, Yogi (our Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) and Jet (our Black Labrador).

I have been painting and drawing all my life , mainly as an hobby and then a few years ago after receiving many orders for commissions I decided to  set up my own business as an Animal and Pet Portrait Artist. I have never looked back and I'm now living my dream.

I love painting in pastels, watercolour and acrylics. Pastels is my medium for my animal portraits as it really captures fur/hair like qualities on the velour paper.

Winner of the Arthur Waller Trophy two years running  Oct 2015 and Oct 2016 for 'Best in Show' at the CLM Annual Art Exhibition. Also winner of the Annual Ruddocks Art Competition , Staff Pick Award for Animal Theme , 2016 with 'Family Embrace' portrait (on the right).

"Animal and Pet Portraits by Julie P ", my pastel portrait paintings of pets and animals will give you an everlasting memory of your pet.  Testimonial from Neil, Lincoln  ( Sky, German WiredHaired Pointer) March 2016 "Wow Julie, I absolutely love it. Thank you so very much. It's like you have managed to capture her perfectly, including her cheeky personality; how do you do that!"

I am a member of the SAA (Society for All Artists) and also a member of the Carlton-le-Moorland Art Group (near Lincoln).   Being an animal lover all my life, I have studied animals and their physiques so I can fully appreciate the different characteristics and unique personality each pet has.  Like children, no two are ever the same.  I believe the eyes are the most important feature for capturing the character of an animal.  I build portraits around the eyes and nose.  My pet portraits are created from photographs so it is imperative that their eyes can be seen clearly and that the photograph is taken at eye level with the subject. This enables me to produce a true likeness and captivating portrait, as illustrated below in one of my horse portraits (please refer to my article on Taking Good Photographs).
